well I'm guessing you're viewing this video because your teacher either didn't have materials to run this lab in the classroom or you at the student did not have access to PowerPoint do this virtual so we're going to go ahead and go through the difference lies in the Virtual Lab you can complete your worksheet as you go through either your teacher has given you a paper to fill out for a Google form sir as you go now I'm teaching this assuming that you've learned a little bit about stars talk to you like you would be my students in my classroom this is PowerPoint for the analyzing Charlotte lab before you can sing you make sure you have your assignment open it might be online or it might be on paper and look like it the next several slides will have all of the information you need to complete part 1 highlights to the right for those with paper coffee all right so we've been talking a lot about stars elements are made of the elements that they are fusing how do we actually know how do we know what stars are made of when they are so far away like everything we know of star we know from analyzing their black here we have a prism remember if you shine white light on a prism it was all of the colors of the rainbow remember why we see the colors that we see because those are the colors to get reflected to our eyes that deer for example it reflects the combination of colors that make brown but absorb all of the other colors grass absorb red yellow blue etcetera but when it comes to is what gets reflected to our eye white light is a combination of all of the colors when you see something white it means it is reflecting everything back to your eye feels pretty cool stuff let's go back to our prison we're going to shine white light on a prism this time we're going to make it pass through a tube filled with hydrogen gas notice that this time when the light split up there are parts of the spectrum that are missing why is that just like with the deer or the grass the hydrogen absorb certain wavelengths of light and reflects others those dark bands that we see in the Spectrum are the colors that the hydrogen gas of Sewell still with me good because here comes the fun part hydrogen those specific wavelengths of light right now we're going to make it give those colors back how do we do that well first you need some hydrogen with traps I'm in that glass now we just need to find a way to excite the gas so it will give the colors back that's where this fancy device comes in first lessons the openings on the bus turn on the device to run an electrical current through the hydrogen and products light up check it out that's what hydrogen looks like when you get up that pinkish glow we see is a combination of all the colors that are in fact if you use the prism to break up the light coming from the hydrogen the Spectrum would only look like a couple of one like this I make it look easy to see here on the screen but really it's pretty difficult that's why we use a special tool called to help us out spectroscope is a really simple tool on one then it has a lens that acts like a prism to split up any light that passes through it on the other end is a narrow slit that limits how much like to enter this makes it much easier to focus on the Spectrum you want let's use our spectroscope to look at hydrogen example look at the light by the Heights there we go much better this is the emission because these are the colors that hydrogen emit when you can okay so why do we care about all this well it turns out that each other periodic table has its own unique emission spectrum when you see the pattern below you know without a doubt you were looking hydrogen element has its own you fingerprint for Bartow all this time we've been talking about stars and what they are made of but we never really explained how we know well this is how we know we look at Starlight and we analyzed all of the different barcodes that we see that tells is what elements are in that star can even tell us they are think back to the Big Bang Theory the number redshift all this is how we learned we noticed the hydrogen Spectrum from disc Galaxy you didn't smash notice its barcode is just that everything has been shifted to the red side of the spectrum the only explanation for the is the lightweight was stretched out as a travel congrats you made it through all of the background in do that you need to finish the lap if you miss any questions on part 1 be sure to go back and find the answers before moving on once you're ready to advance the part of the lap analyzing Starlight lab part 2 instructions on a gas tube to insert into the machine then turn them sheen on and look at the elements emission spectrum you'll be using an element key to help you identify which elements you are looking at an access this key at any time by clicking the element but once you're determined the identity of all five elements Bond part 3 of The Last there is no additional online resource to help you with part 3 in your notes and what you have learned so far you should be able to complete it just fine good luck all right so we can go in any order that we want but to avoid confusion and for this video I'm going to click through in order elements 1 through your goal is to determine elements we are looking at the first we will put element number 10 through a spectroscope this will show us element number one emission spectrum some of you are completing this lab on paper and you are asked to draw this emission spectrum in the appropriate location I will not be waiting nice for you to draw the Spectre so you may pause the video you're going to need to pause the video for those who are doing this on paper you are probably only asked to identify what elements this is either way you will need for identify this element that reason I provided an element key quick on this button that says element key do you eat different elements we will only be observing 5 during this lab the element that we were just looking at is one of these days I'll go ahead and show you the emission Spectra again and then I will show you the element key and you will determine what elements we are looking at as always feel free to pause the video if you need more time but we are going to move on to element number two turn off the device take out the gas tube for element number one and put in four element number two wow this spectrum has more to it than the last Spectrum if you're drawing this you are well leave any place that's black as white on your paper also when grading this your teacher won't count each individual line but they should see efforts to show gaps in the approach places and the correct colors to get this image in your head which of these elements were we just looking at all right now that you've identified element number to let's move on to element number 3 what is much more simple compared to the last element turn on the element key by which elements we are looking at and we will now repeat the process once more elements number for this element is probably the most complicated one in fact probably it is the most complicated element in the lab remember that this element absorb all of those colors what we're doing is heating up the element and probably give those colors back emission spectrum may need to pause the video for this parts for those drawing I'm going to open the element key alright one final element element number Supply an element remember you finish up part 2 of this lab this is how astronomers know what stars are made of if I look at a star and I see the barcode for hydrogen I know that star has hydrogen that is a young star in the main sequence using hydrogen into helium if I see a star that has the bar code for iron I know I'm looking at an old star the star that is stop all of the tiger Jim has left the main sequence is now a red supergiant and excusing all the way up to iron near the end of its left so there is a lot you can tell about a star just by analyzing all right you remember on the instructions it says here that once you have determined the identity of all five elements that you have observed then you can move on to part 3 of the law is no additional online resource to help you with part 3 between your notes and what you have learned so far you should be able to complete it just fine so the video will end here your job is part of the lab and then turn it in in the way that your teacher hasn't struck
